Srinagar:
A jaundice outbreak has impacted at least nine children in Khaloora village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, with all patients currently stable and under close medical observation, officials reported on Wednesday.
Local residents attribute the outbreak to contaminated water being supplied to the area and have criticized the responsible department for failing to ensure sanitation, despite repeated requests to clean the supply system and remove accumulated dirt.
Dr. A. R. Shan, Block Medical Officer for Kulgam, reported that of 20 samples tested, nine returned positive for jaundice. He reassured that all patients are under observation and stable.
Dr. Shan also confirmed that water samples from Khaloora village showed contamination. “The spread of jaundice is due to impure water. Residents are advised to take precautions, particularly to drink only boiled water. Health teams are conducting regular visits to monitor the situation,” he said.
Officials from the Jal Shakti department acknowledged the current issues with water supply and noted that a new water supply scheme for the village would soon be operational. “Yes, the village is facing water supply challenges. A new scheme for the area is set to be launched very soon,” an official stated. (KNO)
