Srinagar:

The Talab Kalan area of Charar-i-Sharif town is facing neglect and bureaucratic inertia, locals said.

Due to the government apathy, Sheikh-ul-Alam Welfare Committee has itself taken up the job to clean up accumulated debris.

Talab Kalan, once a revered site where Hazrat Sheikh ul Alam (RA) was given bath has seen its identity erode over time, locals said. “In 2022, the authorities recognised its importance, allocating 28 lakh 29 thousand rupees for its restoratione. But a fountain installed to enhance its appeal was disconnected from March 2024 due to electricity issues, leaving it non-operational since,” said local resident, Niyaz Ahmad Mir.

“Responsibility for Talab Kalan’s maintenance has been a point of contention. The Waqf Board Unit Charar-i-Sharif claims ownership, while the Municipal Committee has cited limitations in funding and jurisdiction,” local said.

Mir said that the allocated funds for repairs have been spent but stressed no further action has been taken without additional financial support.

Locals voiced frustrations over bureaucratic delays and insufficient upkeep. Calls have been made for clearer delineation of responsibilities and renewed commitment from local authorities to uphold Charar-i-Sharif’s heritage.

Locals also said that they fear damage to Talab Kalam mosque following a landslide in the area. The landslide, which poses a significant risk to the structure of the mosque, has prompted concerns over further damage if repair work was not undertaken.
