The Social Democrats have won the regional election in the German capital Berlin, a city-state that has its own parliament. The SPD and its top candidate Franziska Giffey netted 21.4 per cent of the vote on Sunday, the election commission said after 100 per cent of votes were counted. A three-way coalition is the only way forward. After a long election night, the Social Democrats ended up edging ahead of the Greens, who got 18.9 per cent.
