Azad to contest Lok Sabha elections from Anantnag-Rajouri seat

Srinagar: Chairman of Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad, has announced his candidacy for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat. The announcement came today during a press conference in Srinagar, where DPAP Treasurer TajMohidudin revealed Azad’s decision, said DPAP chief spokesperson, Salman Nizami.

Azad held position of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2021 and Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008. On 26th September 2022, Azad unveiled his own political party, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, of which he serves as the chief patron and founder.

He has also served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government.

Azad’s political career commenced in the early 1970s, marked by roles in various Congress committees. He later rose to become the President of the All-India Youth Congress in 1980. Azad’s parliamentary journey began with his election to the Seventh Lok Sabha from Maharashtra’s Washim constituency in 1980.

After resigning from the Congress, he subsequently formed the Democratic Azad Party.
