A 30-year-old criminal was killed following a late-night shootout on the outskirts of Jammu on Sunday, police said.

The encounter took place in the Miran Sahib area after police laid a trap based on intelligence inputs about the movement of two notorious criminals wanted in more than a dozen cases, including attempt to murder and arms smuggling.

According to officials, the suspects tried to break through the police cordon and opened fire when challenged. Police retaliated in self-defence and to ensure public safety.

During the exchange, the accused abandoned their motorcycle after it met with an accident and attempted to flee under the cover of darkness.

Police later found one of the suspects injured in a canal after a chase. He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. His identity is yet to be confirmed.

Search operations were still underway to trace the second accused when reports last came in.
