The death toll in. Zewan gunfight has reached three while a militant was also killed in an encounter with government forces in Surankote area of Poonch today.

On Monday evening two policemen including an Assistant Sub Inspector were killed and tweleve others wounded as militants attacked a police party in Pathachukh area of Srinagar. The toll climbed to three as one more cop succumbed to the injuries.Meanwhile an unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight with the forces in the forest area of Surankote in Poonch. The firefight was going on when reports last came in.On Monday at least three militants of Kashmir Tigers fired upon the police personnel at Zewan Chowk.
In a statement Police on Monday said at around 6 pm militants  fired upon a police vehicle near Zewan Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar following which senior police officers along with reinforcement reached at the spot.
‘Preliminary investigation has revealed that three (militants) had fired indiscriminately upon a police vehicle carrying police personnel of 9th Battalion near Zewan Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar,” it said. “The police party were coming back to their campus after finishing their duties.”
 The militants took  advantage of darkness to flee from the spot and in the incident 14 police personnel were injured and were shifted to hospital for treatment. “Among the injured personnel, ASI Ghulam Hassan and SgCT Safique Ali succumbed to their injuries, whereas the condition of other injured personnel is stated to be stable.”
IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said,  “Credible sources revealed that the attack was carried by Kashmir Tigers, an offshoot of JeM. In the retaliatory firing, one of the militants got injured.”
The attack in Zewan came barely hours after police claimed to have killed two militants in Rangreth area of Srinagar. There were reports of local youth protesting the killing and resorting to stone pelting in the area after the incident.Security has been intensified in Srinagar after uptick in militant activities. As per reports militants opened fire at a vehicle carrying policeman in Zewan area of Srinagar resulting in their injuries.Meanwhile  one militant was killed in an encounter with joint team of police and army in Doori Dhok area of Surankote area of Poonch today.Army’s Jammu based PRO said in a statement that in a joint operation, Indian Army and JKP killed  one militant in Behramgala, district Poonch after a specific Intelligence inputs of presence of armed militants  in the area.He added that one AK-47 Rifle, four magazines and pouches have been recovered from the slain militant.
