Home Minister assures statehood to CM Omar

The News Craving

Srinagar:

The central government is set to begin the process of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, more than five years after it was revoked, according to media reports. During a meeting in New Delhi yesterday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of the Centre’s full support and confirmed that steps toward statehood restoration would soon be initiated.

The half-hour meeting was described as cordial, with Shah reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to backing the J&K government and assuring that the statehood restoration process would soon commence.

Last week, the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet passed a resolution calling for the restoration of statehood, emphasizing it as a crucial step for preserving J&K’s unique identity. The resolution has already been approved by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Omar Abdullah is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today to present the resolution. Besides statehood, the resolution also emphasizes the need to protect the rights and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier in a social media post, Omar Abdullah reflected on his meeting with Shah, stating, “I emphasized the urgent need for the reinstatement of statehood and highlighted the challenges faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It was a productive half-hour discussion.”
