J&K assembly session set for November 4, Omar to meet Modi to take up statehood issue

The Jammu and Kashmir government today said that the UT Cabinet has passed a resolution urging the Union Government to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to an official statement, the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, met on Thursday and unanimously approved the resolution calling for the restoration of J&K’s statehood.

The Cabinet has authorized the Chief Minister to raise the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government, emphasizing that safeguarding J&K’s identity and rights remains the core policy of the new government.

An official spokesperson confirmed that Omar Abdullah will travel to New Delhi in the coming days to meet with the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers to discuss the matter.

In addition, the Cabinet has decided to convene a session of the Legislative Assembly in Srinagar on November 4. It has advised the Lieutenant Governor to summon and address the Assembly.

A draft of the Lieutenant Governor’s speech for the Assembly’s first session was presented to the Cabinet, which agreed that further discussions are required before finalization.

The Cabinet also recommended Mubarik Gul’s appointment as Protem Speaker, who will administer the oath to the newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly on October 21. Following this recommendation, the Lieutenant Governor issued an official order appointing Gul as Protem Speaker until a permanent Speaker is elected.
