National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah secured a decisive victory in the Ganderbal constituency during the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections on Tuesday, defeating PDP’s Bashir Ahmad Mir by over 10,000 votes. Abdullah also won the Budgam seat, with a margin of more than 18,000 votes.
In Ganderbal, Abdullah garnered 32,727 votes, beating his closest competitor, Mir, who received 22,153 votes, by a margin of 10,574. Abdullah previously won the Ganderbal seat in 2008 and went on to serve as Chief Minister of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Former Ganderbal MLA Ishfaq Jabbar finished in a distant third place with 6,060 votes.
Meanwhile, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah announced that his son Omar Abdullah would take on the role of Chief Minister for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as reported by NDTV. The JKNC, leading in 41 seats, is poised to sweep the elections alongside its ally, Congress.
