Passenger autos in Kashmir plying without fare meters to lose fitness certificate by July 31

The News Craving

Srinagar:

The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir has mandated that all three-wheeler passenger autos must install and use fare meters by July 31, 2024. Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of their fitness certificates.

In an official communication, RTO Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari, highlighted that many three-wheeler passenger autos are operating in the city either without fare meters or with fare meters that are not in use.

The RTO has urged all three-wheeler passenger auto unions to ensure their vehicles use fare meters certified by the Legal Metrology Department by the deadline. Non-compliance will lead to the cancellation of fitness certificates and the imposition of additional penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act, CMVR, and JK Motor Vehicle Rules.

The communication also stated that any violations would be referred to the Legal Metrology Department for action under the JK Standards and Weights & Measures Act.

“This mandate comes despite the fact that all three-wheeler passenger autos are initially approved for fitness with a certified fare meter as a compulsory requirement. However, it has been observed that fare meters are often detached after passing the fitness test. Numerous complaints regarding this issue have been received through media and the general administration,” the communique read. (KNO)
