Plea filed in Supreme Court seeking restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir

The News Craving

Srinagar:

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court, urging the Union Government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir within two months, according to a report by Live Law. The petition, submitted by college teacher Zahoor Ahmed Bhat and activist Khurshid Ahmad Malik, contends that the government’s delay in restoring statehood violates the principle of federalism.

The petitioners argue that the Union Government has failed to honor its commitment to restore statehood to the region, despite the Supreme Court’s previous judgment that upheld the abrogation of Article 370, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. The court, at that time, directed the government to restore statehood “as soon as possible,” but did not provide a concrete timeline.

The plea, filed through Advocate Soyaib Quresi, asserted that forming a Legislative Assembly before reinstating full statehood would undermine the federal structure.
