Rajnath Singh in Jammu to review security situation

Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday arrived in Jammu and is scheduled to visit Rajouri where 5 army personnel were killed in a blast during a gunfight in Kandi forest area yesterday.

An official said that Rajnath Singh landed in Jammu today where he was received by Army Chief Manoj Pande and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha

He said that Singh will head towards Rajouri to take a security assessment amid the ongoing anti-militancy operation in the area.

5 army personnel were killed and an officer was injured after militants triggered a blast during a gunfight in Kandi forest area on Friday.

Earlier, today army said that a militant has been killed while another one is likely injured as the operation resumed in Kandi forest area.

Defence spokesman Lt. Colonel Devender Anand said that one militant was killed while another was likely wounded in the gunfight.

“In the ongoing joint operation in Kandi Forest, Rajouri sector by Indian Army in coordination with JKP & CRPF, at approx 0700 hours the cordon while closing in spotted and pinned down the militants. In the ensuing gunbattle one militant has been neutralised and one militant is likely to be injured,” he said.

He further added that so far huge recoveries have been made in the operation.

The recoveries include one AK56, four magazines of AK, 56 rounds of AK, 1 x 9mm pistol with mag, three grenades & one ammunition pouch.

“Identity of the neutralised militant is being ascertained,” he said.
