Despite frequent snowfall in the higher reaches over the past two weeks, Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with a significant rainfall deficit. The local Meteorological Department (MeT) reported that the deficiency has risen to 72% between October 1 and December 4.
Rainfall Deficit Across J&K
According to MeT data, the region has recorded only 19.9 mm of rainfall during the last two months, compared to the normal average of 70.5 mm. Most weather stations across J&K registered deficient rainfall ranging from 60% to 99%.
- Srinagar: 82% deficit
- Shopian: Highest deficit at 96%
- Samba: Exceptionally high rainfall at 47 mm, 160% above normal
Other districts such as Kulgam, Budgam, and Poonch faced deficits exceeding 90%, while Anantnag, Kishtwar, Pulwama, and Udhampur saw deficits above 80%. Baramulla, Ganderbal, and Ramban recorded deficits exceeding 70%.
Cold Wave Intensifies
Srinagar recorded the season’s coldest night at -4.1°C, while Shopian emerged as the coldest location in Kashmir, with temperatures plunging to -6.6°C.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that dry weather is expected to continue until December 7. However, light rain is anticipated in some plains and hilly areas of the Jammu division between the evening of December 8 and the forenoon of December 9. Light snow and rain are also likely in higher reaches of the Kashmir division during this period.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds may affect parts of the Jammu division on the evening and night of December 8. From December 10 to December 14, dry weather is expected to prevail, with isolated rain or snow predicted on December 15 and 16.
Advisory for Tourists and Travellers
The MeT has advised tourists, travellers, and transporters to adhere to administrative and traffic guidelines to ensure safety amid the cold wave and potential weather disruptions.
