The European Union is to spend “at least” €500 million ($556 million) on humanitarian aid in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced. The funds from the EU budget would “deal with the humanitarian consequences of this tragic war” by assisting Ukraine and refugees, von der Leyen told a special sitting of the European Parliament. The funding is to match the €500 million the EU agreed to spend on the purchase and delivery of weapons to Ukraine.
